Gravestone data transcribed by J. E. Rickenbacker from a document in the Salley Archives.
The Old Rickenbacker Burial Ground and homestead was located about 700 feet West of Broughton Street, just North of Club Acres Drive (based on an eye witness account). This is the only burial ground we know of on the old Rickenbacker plantation and is almost certainly where Anna Burgi and Catharina Till were buried (Salley, pp 200, 210). It was probably also the final resting place for Heinrich Rickenbacher, Heini Rickenbacher and Anna Till although there is no documentation for where these three were buried. In the early 1950s, the Club Acres area was subdivided and became a residential area. When the lot containing the burial ground was sold, all the graves and markers that could be found were moved to plot A-436 in Memorial Park Cemetery. The move took place on 16 Sep 1952. All of the markers found at that time were dated 1805 or later. After almost 200 years there was little evidence of earlier burials. I was 9 years old at the time and can recall my parents discussing moving of the graves. Permission to move the graves was sought and was granted by at least two branches of the Rickenbacker family. Following is my transcription of a document that was aparently created about the time the graves were moved. This is probably the best record of the gravestones as 50 years of additional weathering has taken its toll and many of the gravestones documented here are now barely legible. |
