Hurricane Claudette, July 14 & 15, 2003
Hurricane Claudette passed 63 miles SSW of our beach as a Category 1 storm (85 mph) and went ashore
at Matagorda Island. There was a storm surge that overtopped the dune. The surge moved the vegetation line back
about 40 feet in less than 24 hours. The yard was a mess and there had been 6 inches of water in the downstairs
storeroom, leaving an inch of smelly silt. There was no significant damage, just a big mess to clean up.
July 14, BEFORE - a nice day but the tide is very high. Note the dunes in front of the sand fence.
July 15, AFTER - the dunes in front of the sand fence, the fence itself aand the walkover steps are gone.
The first line of dunes was destroyed to the northeast.
The first line of dunes was also destroyed to the southwest.
Salt cedar grows well here and looks strong but it really isn't much protection.
A lot of trash was washed into the yards and the driveway.
