Hurricane Claudette, July 14 & 15, 2003

Hurricane Claudette passed 63 miles SSW of our beach as a Category 1 storm (85 mph) and went ashore at Matagorda Island. There was a storm surge that overtopped the dune. The surge moved the vegetation line back about 40 feet in less than 24 hours. The yard was a mess and there had been 6 inches of water in the downstairs storeroom, leaving an inch of smelly silt. There was no significant damage, just a big mess to clean up.

Sea Isle

Salt cedar grows well here and looks strong but it really isn't much protection.

A lot of trash was washed into the yards and the driveway.
